Jean Cocteau

This project involved the renovation of the beloved Jean Cocteau Cinema into a modern theater and event space. While staying true to Jeff Harnar’s original Art Deco vision for the theater, autotroph developed a plan to create a flexible performance space in order to host a variety of events and performances. Autotroph was engaged to develop a cost effective strategy to improve the visitor experience, based upon input from community engagement sessions.

The theater rake was rebuilt to accommodate comfortable seating while also improving sight lines. The front portion of the theater was leveled and movable lounge furniture was added to accommodate a variety of configurations. Lighting, acoustic, and ADA improvements rounded out the scope.
