Excessive ornament from the building was removed and the exterior then rendered in white as a contrast to the vivid and colorful experience to be found inside.

Another non-profit organization, Chimara, leases the learning center space. Housed in the former bowling alley party room, this space provides an area for a variety of programs, taught by Meow Wolf Artists, that instruct youth in opportunities afforded in the intersection of art and technology.

Maker Space

Maker Space

In keeping with the community art focus of the project, a maker space was included in the renovation. The space is leased by Make Santa Fe,  a non-profit organization that provides affordable access to a wide variety of equipment including 3D printers, laser cutters, CNC fabrication equipment and power tools. Windows in the main corridor allow visitors to see makers at work.

The building was completely gutted to accommodate its new function. The building envelope was improved, new HVAC and Electrical systems installed, and a new exiting strategy was implemented. The building systems were intentionally left exposed to provide an industrial character befitting of an experimental arts facility.

Support & Circulation Spaces

Every inch of the interior building is used for art, nowhere is this more apparent than in the main corridor and restroom area. In an act of Anti-Architecture, the design of the spaces and finishes was intentionally kept simple to provide a canvas for artists. In a nod to the buildings past, black light carpet matching the former flooring was installed.
